FRESNO, Calif. — Grief hung heavily over Fresno High School on Tuesday as students and teachers struggled to come to terms with the sudden death of 14-year-old Daniel Padilla Jr., who collapsed during a physical education class and later died at a local hospital.

Emergency crews responded shortly after noon on Monday following a 911 call reporting an unconscious student inside the school’s south gym. Despite efforts to help him, Padilla was pronounced dead later that day. The Fresno Unified School District confirmed his passing Monday evening. Authorities have not yet released the cause of death.

The unexpected loss has deeply shaken the campus community. Hallways that would normally be filled with conversation were noticeably quieter as students processed the tragedy and leaned on friends and teachers for support.

Josiah Hernandez, who recalled experiencing a similar loss while he was in high school, said teenagers often find it difficult to talk about grief. According to Hernandez, young people sometimes withdraw instead of sharing what they feel. “They shut themselves out, and I feel like that’s not the way to do it,” he said, expressing hope that students today will receive more guidance and emotional support than he did at the time.

District leaders acknowledged the profound impact of the loss. In a statement, Fresno Unified said mental health professionals were made available at Fresno High School to provide counseling and social-emotional assistance to students who may be struggling with the news. Support services are also being offered to faculty and staff.

The emotional strain has been visible beyond the school campus. Brooklynn Hamm, who works at a nearby coffee shop often visited by teachers, said she has noticed how deeply the tragedy is affecting them. “It’s just clear that it’s impacting a lot of the faculty,” she said. “They care about these students so much.”

As investigators work to determine what led to Padilla’s sudden collapse, the Fresno High School community continues to mourn while rallying around one another in remembrance of a young life gone far too soon.
