Bradley Deaton Seymour, Indiana Death and Obituary: Gone But Never Forgotten

The Seymour, Indiana, community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Bradley Deaton, 55, who tragically lost his life while attempting to assist others during historic flooding in Jackson County. His death occurred after a multi-day search that ended on Sunday, March 8, when his body was recovered at 2:22 p.m.

Deaton had gone missing on Friday, March 6, after he and another man ventured into the floodwaters near County Road 400 E and State Road 258, east of Cortland. The pair were using an airboat to rescue people trapped in a submerged vehicle when the boat suffered a sudden mechanical failure. The powerful current swept the boat under a bridge and caused it to capsize. While the operator of the boat was able to rescue himself, Deaton, a passenger, was swept away by the floodwaters and carried downstream, making his recovery a tragic and prolonged effort.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), neither man was wearing a life jacket at the time, and the swift, rising waters of the East Fork White River created extreme and life-threatening conditions. Despite the dangers, Deaton’s actions reflected his unwavering dedication to helping others.

The search, which involved local agencies like the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department, and other first responders, captivated the region. Throughout the search, community members described Deaton as a man who epitomized selflessness and bravery, with a heart dedicated to his neighbors and his community.

Bradley Deaton’s death leaves a profound void in Seymour. His courage in the face of danger, and his commitment to others, will not be forgotten. As friends, family, and neighbors remember him, they honor not only his heroic actions but the legacy of kindness he leaves behind.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The Seymour community continues to extend thoughts, prayers, and support to Deaton’s grieving family.
