Sophie Klippel Hit-and-Run Crash Charlotte, NC Obituary and Death: Tragic Loss
CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte community is mourning the tragic loss of 23-year-old Sophie Klippel, who died Thursday night, March 12, 2026, after a fatal hit-and-run crash in the Plaza Midwood area of east Charlotte.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the collision occurred around 10:15 p.m. at the intersection of The Plaza and Hamorton Place. Investigators reported that a Honda Odyssey allegedly ran a stop sign, striking a Kia Soul traveling through the intersection. Sophie Klippel, a passenger in the Kia Soul, was killed in the crash.
Two other occupants of the Kia Soul, including the driver, 21-year-old Lena Klippel, and 62-year-old passenger Kelly Klippel, were injured and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed there was no indication of impairment on the part of the Kia’s driver at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Honda Odyssey, however, fled the scene on foot immediately after the collision. Police have not yet released additional details regarding the suspect or any arrests. Investigators have also pointed out that Sophie Klippel was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, underscoring the importance of seatbelt use in preventing serious injury or death during accidents.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, providing assistance and securing the area. Authorities continue to review evidence, witness statements, and traffic patterns in an effort to determine the circumstances of the collision and identify the driver responsible for the hit-and-run.
